Which SFP do I need for my fiber connection?

You want your provider's box out of the meter cupboard and the fiber straight into the SFP port of your own router: UniFi, MikroTik, OPNsense or FRITZ!Box. Sometimes that takes one module and a patch cord, sometimes it can't be done. It depends on the technology at your address: AON, GPON or XGS-PON. This tool asks who your provider is and what you see in the meter cupboard. Then it tells you what you need and what to sort out with your provider.

Your situation with KPN

Technology: AON (point-to-point) (based on your meter cupboard)

Yes, your own SFP module works here

On AON you have your own fiber to the exchange. Your provider doesn't need to register anything: with the right BiDi module and the right router settings, you're online.

What you need

1G BiDi module, BX-U, 20 km

GLC-BX-U20-SO: transmits at 1310 nm, receives at 1490 nm, simplex LC. Your end always takes the U variant; the D sits in the exchange. The 20 km version also works on the short lines to the exchange.

SC/APC to LC/UPC patch cord (green)

A green FTU needs an SC/APC to LC/UPC patch cord. It isn't in the shop yet. Get in touch and we'll let you know what's possible.

  • Never plug a green (APC) connector into a blue (UPC) socket, or the other way round. The end faces don't match: you lose signal and damage the connector in your FTU.
  • Upgrading your plan or switching provider? Your address may move to XGS-PON. Your BiDi module won't work there, so ask before you switch.

Router settings

Internet via PPPoE on VLAN 6. IPTV on VLAN 4.

Always check this against your provider's manual.

Information from KPN

Ask your provider

  • Which technology do you deliver at my address: AON, GPON or XGS-PON?
  • May I use my own SFP module or ONT, and do I need to register it?
  • Which VLANs and which login method (PPPoE or DHCP) do you use?
  • What happens to my connection if I upgrade or switch?

AON, GPON and XGS-PON in three minutes

AON: a fiber of your own

Every connection has its own fiber from the meter cupboard to the exchange. At your end the module transmits at 1310 nm and receives at 1490 nm: 1000BASE-BX-U. Because the line is yours alone, your provider doesn't need to register anything. This is where our BiDi module fits.

GPON: shared through a splitter

One fiber from the exchange is split across 32 or 64 addresses by a passive splitter. The wavelengths are the same as AON, but the protocol differs: the exchange has to recognise your ONT by its serial number. That's why you need a GPON ONT your provider allows.

XGS-PON: the 10G successor

The successor to GPON: 10 Gbit/s shared, upstream at 1270 nm and downstream at 1577 nm. KPN has only installed XGS-PON since mid-2021 and Delta since 2022, and 4 and 8 Gbit/s plans run on it. Here too: an ONT plus registration.

How to recognise your connection in the meter cupboard

No need to unscrew anything. Look at what's there and what the labels say.

Diagram: fiber from the wall, through the FTU to an NT or ONT, then to your routerFTUNT (AON)ONT (PON)Router

FTU: the wall box

This is where the fiber enters your home. Passive: no power, no lights. According to the Dutch regulator ACM it's the network termination point; everything behind it is, in principle, your choice.

NT or media converter: AON

A box with a fiber cable from the FTU and a network port to your router, without a PON light. At KPN it often says Genexis. If this is what you see, you probably have AON.

ONT: GPON or XGS-PON

A box with a PON light, or a label saying GPON, XGS-PON or ONT (for example Nokia, Genexis, ZTE or Zyxel). That means PON. Sometimes the ONT is built into the modem.

Blue or green: the plug in your FTU

The FTU has an SC socket in two versions. Blue is SC/UPC, polished flat. Green is SC/APC, polished at an 8 degree angle. At KPN it can be either, per FTU; at Delta it's always green. Our BiDi module has an LC socket, so you need a patch cord from SC to LC with the right colour on the FTU side. BiDi only uses one fiber; with a duplex patch cord the second fiber stays unused.

Blue: SC/UPC

Flat end face. Fits our duplex SC/UPC to LC/UPC patch cord; you use one of its two fibers.

Green: SC/APC

Angled end face (8°). Needs an SC/APC to LC/UPC patch cord; get in touch for that one.

Get in touch

Never mix them. A green plug in a blue socket, or the other way round, hits the end face wrong. You lose signal and can damage the connector in the FTU. And that FTU belongs to your provider.

Connecting it yourself on AON

  • Order the BX-U module (GLC-BX-U20-SO), not the D: that one is already in the exchange.
  • Pick your router's brand as coding, or MSA (Generic) if your router doesn't do a vendor check.
  • Get a patch cord from SC to LC in the same colour as your FTU: blue (UPC) or green (APC). If it's duplex, use one fiber: SC into the FTU, the LC of that same fiber into the module.
  • Set your provider's VLAN and login method (PPPoE or DHCP) in your router.
  • Connect the patch cord to the FTU and the module, remove your provider's box and check the connection.

Settings change and we don't track them per provider. Your provider's manual is what counts.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use an SFP module on KPN fiber?

On AON, yes: a 1000BASE-BX-U module that transmits at 1310 nm and receives at 1490 nm, no registration needed. On XGS-PON you need an ONT that you register through the KPN service tool. On GPON KPN doesn't allow your own ONT; KPN moves you to XGS-PON free of charge.

Does my own SFP module work with Odido?

If Odido delivers over the KPN network and your address has AON, yes: a BiDi module transmitting at 1310 nm. On Odido's own network (PON) you need an ONT that Odido registers through customer service. Odido's postcode check shows which network you're on.

Do I have GPON or AON?

Look in your meter cupboard. A separate box marked NT or media converter without a PON light points to AON. A PON light or GPON or XGS-PON on the label means PON. The installation date helps too: at KPN everything since mid-2021 is XGS-PON, at Delta everything since 2022. Want to be sure? Ask your provider.

Am I allowed to use my own modem or module in the Netherlands?

In principle, yes. Since 28 January 2022 the Dutch regulator ACM treats the passive FTU as the network termination point. Everything behind it, such as ONT, modem and router, is your choice. On PON your provider may still require you to register your device, and if your own equipment causes problems your provider may offer less support.

Why don't you sell GPON or XGS-PON sticks?

An ONT stick has to match the network, the equipment in the exchange and your provider's registration. We can't guarantee that per address. We only sell what we can back up: the BiDi module for AON.

BX-U or BX-D: which one do I need?

Always BX-U. It transmits at 1310 nm and receives at 1490 nm. The D module does the opposite and sits at the exchange. Two U's or two D's never give you link.

Which patch cord do I need?

A single-mode patch cord from SC to LC. The SC end must match the colour of the socket in your FTU: blue is SC/UPC, green is SC/APC. The LC end is UPC. Blue is in the shop as a duplex patch cord: BiDi uses one of its two fibers, the other stays unused. For green, get in touch with us.

Isn't 20 km too much for the short line to the exchange?

No. The BX-U20 also works on the short AON lines to the exchange. You don't need an attenuator for it.
